The 45 degree Tri-Clamp elbow is offered in 304 and 316L stainless steel alloy. A clamp adapter which may be a single pin heavy duty clamp equipped with wing nut and bolt clamps as well as rubber gaskets should be used for effective holding of the connecting ends. This is 3A certified for sanitary-grade process equipment, enabling usage in food and beverage as well as pharmaceutical industry. 3A Sanitary Standards Inc. certifies products to be in compliance with FDA and USDA regulations for contaminants control in food and beverage as well as pharmaceutical processes.
Product Overview
The Eagle 45° Sanitary Tri-Clamp Elbow allows for a smoother turn than the 90° elbow, thus minimizing turbulence and pressure drop for the transition while preserving sanitary characteristics. This elbow is ideal when the line needs to make a change of direction in a gentle way, for instance, when needing to have pipework designed around an obstacle, a sloped drain line, or figure out a piping manifold where flow dynamics or drainability are crucial. Made as a seamless stainless-steel tube, the interior surface of the elbow is electropolished to 32Ra as a minimum standard, while the high-purity applications require polishing up to 20Ra or even 15Ra grade. Each elbow includes an identification number indicating the batch of fabricated material used in its construction.

When should I choose a 45° elbow instead of a 90° elbow?
When a process line needs to bend around something without a sudden turn, a 45° elbow is the appropriate choice, such as when creating a sloped drain line that needs to stay slanted to ensure proper drain flow, or when using it as part of the manifold in a piping setup, which helps prevent turbulence and pressure loss. The flow through a 45° elbow is also much less turbulent than through a 90° elbow, which lowers power usage of pumps and increases the speed of cleaning solutions.
What clamp and gasket should I use with this 45° elbow?
This 45-degree elbow uses standard tri-clamp fittings and requires the corresponding clamp and gasket with the nominal size. For manual connections, the single pin heavy-duty clamp with wing nut is the preferred choice; for high pressure and temperature applications, the bolted clamp is a better choice. The gasket must be selected in accordance with the process fluid and the CIP/SIP temperature – EPDM is recommended for food and dairy products, FKM for high temperature and tough chemical conditions, and PTFE for harsh chemicals. The clamp must be correctly sized to match the ferrule diameter — a 2-inch elbow will require a 2-inch clamp and gasket.
Can this elbow be used in a fully drainable system?
Indeed, the use of a 45° Tri-Clamp elbow oriented correctly guarantees complete gravity drainage, which is fundamental for CIP efficiency and for avoiding the accumulation of residue in the line. When the elbow is installed with the slope of the liquid flow towards the drain, the angle of 45° is optimum for ensuring total drainage after the system has been drained. This is one of the main factors that predispose the use of 45° elbows instead of 90° ones in horizontal drainage lines since the lesser angle prevents the liquid from being stuck in the elbow after draining. In the case of vertical-horizontal transitions, the combination of a 45° elbow and a short piece of a straight pipe will allow for better drainage than a single 90° elbow.
What surface finish should I specify for my application?
The type of surface finish should be chosen based on the level of cleanliness required by your industry. Electropolished finish of 32Ra is appropriate for most processes in food, dairy, and beverages as it provides good cleaning possibility. For pharmaceutical and high-purity water production, a finish of 20Ra (better cleanliness) may be required. The most modern biopharmaceutical processes require a finishing of 15Ra, but the higher the degree of finish, the more expensive it is.
