The 45 Degrees Tri-Clamp elbow is made of a 304 and 316L stainless steel alloy. There are clamper adaptors available such as single pin heavy-duty clamp with wing nut or bolted clamp and should be used together with rubber gaskets to fasten joining ends. The product received its 3A certification, which qualifies it for sanitary-grade line processing equipment in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications. 3A sanitary standards certify compliance of their products to both FDA and USDA standards to avoid contamination in food, beverage, dairy, and pharmaceutical industries.
Product Overview
The Eagle 45° Sanitary Tri-Clamp Elbow is designed to connect different sanitary line feeds at an angle while maintaining flow efficiency and providing complete drainage in the system. With the 45-degree elbow, only half the resistance to flow is created, which reduces turbulence, pressure losses, and the energy necessary to sustain the flow through the turn. The elbows are made of seamless stainless steel piping with standard 32Ra electropolished inside surface finish, thus giving the elbow smooth surface and crevice-free path of the fluid that can prevent any bacteria from adhering to the surface and, at the same time, providing proper cleaning during CIP process. The Tri-Clamp ends with beveled seats connect with standard ferrules of the same nominal size, while each and every fitting has its heat lot number stamped on the body.

When should I use a 45° elbow instead of two 45° elbows or a 90° elbow?
In the situation where piping needs to make an angle of 45 degrees, such as when two pipe segments connect at this angle or if there is a drain pipe that needs to slope, the ideal option is a single 45-degree elbow. Two elbows of 45 degrees placed next to each other help create a smooth curve and is usually considered as the best option in directing the piping past an obstacle and reducing pressure drop. When the pipe needs to turn such a corner, the simplest option is to use a single elbow of 90 degrees, although it has a harsher effect on the fluid passing through it than the 45-degree elbow does.
How does the flow coefficient of a 45° elbow compare to a straight section of tube?
The installation of a 45° sanitary elbow contributes slight resistance to fluid flow, as compared to an equivalent length of straight pipe — and it typically is equivalent to the added friction seen in 10 to 15 pipe diameters of straight run, depending on the fluid velocity and pipe wall finish. This roughly equals to half of the resistance offered by 90° short radius elbows of the same diameter. In actual practice, the pressure loss across a single 45° elbow is so minimal that it seldom affects pump sizing in the majority of sanitary process applications. However, the total effect caused by the elbows has to be taken into consideration in total head for the piping installation, as using 45° elbows instead of 90° elbows should lower total pumping required by the system.
What is the difference between the 304 and 316L material options for this elbow?
The stainless-steel solution of grade 304 offers satisfactory corrosion resistance within normal dairy, food, and beverage uses involving the typical CIP process with moderate temperatures. While the type of stainless steel 316L offers additional molybdenum to enhance pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, it is the best choice if the process calls for using chlorinated sanitizers or acidic products or conducting high-temperature SIP cycles at temperatures exceeding 135°C. The grade of 316L is typically specified for pharmaceutical and biotech applications, and any other applications the cost of corrosion failure in which outweighs the cost of additional materials. Both stainless steel options are 3A certified and comply with the requirements of the sanitary standard 63-04.
Can this elbow be welded directly into a process line instead of using Tri-Clamp connections?
We have produced this elbow with Tri-Clamp bevel seat ends for the purpose of fitting. For welding connection requirements, the same elbow configuration of 45 ° is offered with butt weld ends that can be welded in the process piping to obtain a permanent, crevice-free joint. The welded version will do away with the gasket and clamp, and is ideal for any extreme sterile or high purity application.
