Product Overview
This sanitary tubing is produced according to ASTM A270 standards which comprise the specifications for stainless steel tubes that are to be used in sanitary processes. The tubing has a shiny annealed surface hence it has a very smooth interior that minimizes fluid friction and prevents products deposited on the walls of the tubes. The tubing has its own lot number on it which makes it easy to trace every material used in its manufacture from the tube to the original source which is a requirement that must be met for pharmaceutical purposes and food security. The material of the tubing is stainless steel 304 or 316 and it meets the requirements for specifications, surface quality, and dimensions of 3A Sanitation Standards.

Using Barlow's formula and the properties mentioned above, the pressures are determined as follows: Material 316L, yield strength 25000 PSI, and tensile strength 70000 PSI. Working pressure is calculated as ¼ of the bursting pressure at a temperature range of -20 °F to 100 °F.

Chemical Composition

What is sanitary stainless steel?
Sanitary stainless steel is known as stainless steel that has undergone processing, finish, and certification to meet strict guidelines of hygienic processing. In terms of tubing, this means complying with ASTM A270 which is the standard specification that governs the production of austenitic stainless steel sanitary tubing that is either seamless or welded. The surface finish of the material has to be smooth and non-porous so that it can repel bacteria; the surface should have no internal crevices or defects that can catch the product inside, and full material traceability has to be provided. The grades 304 and 316L are referred to as the standard alloys while 316L is selected if enhanced resistance to corrosion is needed.
What is the difference between sanitary tubing and pipe?
Sanitary tubing Piping and piping differ in terms of size and connections. Piping has standard specifications based on the outside diameter (OD), and it is connected with the help of a Tri-Clamp fitting used. The pipes are specified according to the nominal piping size (NPS) based on the inner diameter and are connected via threaded or flanged fittings. Use of pipe and pipe fittings in hygienic processes is typical due to the fact that Tri-Clamp pipes are easy to connect and void-free.
What are three types of stainless steel tubing?
In sanitary processing, three main types of stainless steel tubing can be distinguished, which are seamless, welded and drawn, and as-welded. Seamless tubing is obtained by piercing a solid billet steel and then drawing it, which means that there is no any longitudinal weld seam in it and thus it can be used in the most demanding applications. Welded and drawn tubing is manufactured from flat strip that is roll-formed into a tubular shape, welded and drawn into a tubing. This means that the weld area is continuously refined making it virtually indistinguishable from the main material. As-welded tubing is produced from the roll-formed and welded tube without further drawing, this type of tubing is used when the presence of the visible weld bead is acceptable. A welded and drawn tubing is considered to be the best solution among the three in most sanitary application cases.
How thick is sanitary tubing?
Sanitary tubing Usually 16 gauge steel is used for tube sizes ranging from 1/2" to 3" OD which has a wall thickness of 0.065". The wall thickness provides mechanical strength sufficient for several hundred PSI of pressure at room temperatures and at the same time is light enough for manual handling and is compatible with automatic orbital welding machinery. For bigger pipe sizes starting from 4", wall thickness increases to either 14 gauge or 12 gauge in order for the pipe to remain structurally sound when higher mechanical loads apply. The wall thickness is uniform around the entire pipe circumference within the tolerance of +/-10%.
