Frequently Asked Questions
What is a concentric reducer?
The sanitary pipe fitting known as a concentric reducer connects two different-sized tubes while keeping the same central axis on both ends. Therefore, the reduction is symmetrical over the pipe. In sanitary applications, concentric reducers are used in cases where it is necessary to keep the vertical positioning of the pipe, such as when joining the outlet of a small tank to a large transfer line or when changing the diameter of a vertically upright pipe. The smooth tapering inside surface keeps the product from accumulating at the place where the reduction takes place, allowing for CIP cleaning of the system without forming any dead legs where the velocity of the fluid drops and residue buildup can occur.
What is the difference between concentric and eccentric reducers?
A concentric reducer has equal diameters on both ends, which implies the diameter of the pipe changes proportionately. An eccentric reducer is different as one edge is flat — its smaller and larger parts are not aligned, meaning that one edge of the fitting is flat while the other side has a reduction in diameter. The type of reducer required depends on the direction in which the pipe runs and the necessity for the pipe to drain completely. The concentric reducer is used when the piping runs vertically or in horizontal pipes where the drainage is not necessary. The eccentric reducer is used in horizontal pipes where the draining should be done completely— the flat edge is pointing down which prevents any liquid from staying at the junction.
Why use an eccentric reducer?
An eccentric reducer is utilized in horizontal pipeline installations where the line must fully drain via gravity. Thanks to the flat side of this reducer, the liquid is prevented from getting trapped in a siphon at the reduction point, which could happen if a concentric reducer was used instead. For hygienic purposes, this is important for effective cleaning and hygiene during operation, for recovering leftover liquids after the production batch, and for preventing liquid from stagnating in certain areas, which could lead to presence of bacteria. Eccentric reducers are often used in pump suction opening to prevent formation of bubbles in the device and its damage as a result of cavitation.
Which is better: concentric reducer or bell reducer?
Bell reducers are essentially a connection that has a prominent angle of conical fitting. On the contrary, a concentric reducer has a longer and more gradual taper which helps in a smooth transition of flow from one diameter to another. In food processing, a concentric reducer is preferred because its gradual round profile leads to less turbulence, lower pressure loss, and less product quality damage. Another advantage is that it can be cleaned more satisfactorily than a bell reducer because of its smoother surface.
