Product Overview
The size of 2-1/2 inches represents a specific category on sanitary processing. It is larger than a typical 2-inch transfer line but is smaller than either a 3-inch pipe or a 4-inch header. It is routinely used at both the suction and discharge lines of positive-displacement pumps, in addition to being employed as a CIP supply line and for transferring intermediate flows, for which, if a 2-inch hose were used, there would be a significant pressure drop, whereas if a 3-inch hose is used, it may be oversized and inconvenient. Its standard bevel seat is suitable for 2-1/2-inch Tri-Clamp ferrules, which allows for flush and crevice-free characteristics common to all the fittings from Eagle sanitary product range. The hose end has barbs which allow for rubber hoses to be fitted to it; its engagement length and specific design of retaining system supports thick industrial rubber hose with more solid wall than Tygon tubing.

Why specify a 2-1/2 inch adapter rather than a 2-inch or 3-inch?
The 2-1/2 inch diameter is selected when a 2 inch line creates too much pressure drop at the desired flow rate, while a 3 inch line is too large for the available area or would require an inordinate length of pipe. It is typically used when connecting multiple pump connections or when creating CIP loops with multiple flows. Using the appropriate diameter allows one to avoid wasting energy and problems associated with an excessively large or heavy pipe.
How does the rubber hose adapter differ from the Tygon hose adapter in the same size?
What sets the two apart is the barb shape and type of hose that is supposed to go with them. The rubber hose adapter has a more prominent barb engagement and retention ridge, which is used to latch onto the thicker and heavier rubber sanitary hose. Rubber hoses, in this case, are used when the job requires higher-diameter hoses capable of withstanding higher pressures and carrying superior burst and abrasion properties. The Tygon adapter, on the other hand, has a barb profile tailored to the thin flexible wall structure of Tygon tubing. Thus, the two types of adapters are completely different and are not usable with one another as Tygon adapter does not hold rubber hoses firmly, while rubber adapter does not fit Tygon tubing.
What maintenance is required for a rubber hose adapter in CIP service?
Routine maintenance includes visual inspection during each CIP cycle and a more thorough inspection when the hose is changed on a regular basis. The surface of the barb should be inspected for pitting and wear or corrosion. Cases of crevice corrosion will mostly occur near the hose end where the barb meets the hose in case the clamp was over-tightened. The bevel seating face should be evaluated for damage that does not permit a good seal with the gasket. The adapter itself is not lubricated or adjusted. If the barb sustains corrosion or wear, the adapter has to be changed. A replacement will cost nothing compared to the cost of contamination resulting from an inappropriate fitting.
Can this adapter be used with a hose clamp, or is the friction fit sufficient?
We would recommend the use of a stainless-steel clamp for a rubber hose on a 2.5 inch barb especially when pressure/vibration/temperature cycles are involved. Due to the larger diameter and the heavier construction of the hose, higher mechanical load is applied than what can be reliably achieved through friction fit alone. The clamp must be situated behind the retention ridge on the barb shank and torqued to the hose manufacturer's specifications. Over-tightening might lead to the hose's reinforcement to be cut through thus reducing the useful life of the hose. The clamp has to be checked every time the hose is changed and replaced if any signs of corrosion/deformation is visible.
