You see two different fittings with identical nominal sizes  '1/2 NPT' and '1/2 NPSM.' They may look pretty similar, and one might even notice equal measurements of the outside diameter and identical number of threads on each device. Why, then, are they not identical? How Each One Seals

The NPT type utilizes a tapered shape to create a seal. The difference, however, looks different on the paper than in reality; you simply need to look at the screws; a male screw in NPT has a reduced diameter toward the end, while the male screw in NPSM maintains the diameter all the way to the tip.

Are NPS and NPT Compatible? The Straight Answer

To summarize, they may connect physically but will not connect functionally. Though the NPSM and NPT have identical diameters and pitches, the NPSM female swivel can be joined to the NPT male manually. The reason is the male is tapered and gets stuck in the female threads before filling the thread volume of the straight female. Thus, even if the connection is tight, no sealant can form due to the fact that the methods used for sealing are different: there’s a device that is responsible for sealing in each case (if the NPT male fits tightly inside the female, getting no sealing seal, while the NPSM uses the O-ring and cone methods).

How to Choose: NPSM or NPT?

The Hybrid: NPSM Female onto NPT Male (Cone Seat)

A common example of real-world hybrid connection is female NPSM swivel nut joined to a male NPT connector with a 30-degree cone seat, which is the norm for hydraulic connectors.

  • The male and female components are NPT threaded (so it can be installed in the equipment port, sealed with tape or dope).
  • On the same male side, there is a cone seat at 30°.
  • The female NPSM swivel nut joins the male straight threaded portion, pushing the cone-to-cone seal.  

This is a valid and proper connection, but only due to the cone seat on the male side. Otherwise there would be a leak from the plain NPT male when using the NPSM nut.
